A Little Bit Everyday
Part of staying in vocal shape is exercising my voice almost every day. I mean yeah, it’s hard to not sing along to my favorite Michael McDonald song driving up and down i25, but I’m talking about formal exercising. Consistency is a long-lasting theme with me. This month’s track is to help with just that– an exercise to help with just warming up your voice and navigating a few basic techniques to get you through whatever you’re working on.
The track takes you through four exercises (9 min long)
Inhale Hold Hum
Here we are combining some breathing control along with vocalizing on our exhales.
In-4, Hold-4, Hum (x3)
5th-Octave slides
Here we are stretching our voices, sliding between each pitch. 1- 5 - 1 - 8 - 1
Recommended vowel: Oo or Oh
Major Arpeggio with a hold
Here we are practicing full engagement with longer phrases, working on consistency and smoothness. 1 - 3 - 5 - 8…. - 5 - 3 - 1
Recommended vowels: Gee, Noh, Moh
5-3-1 Belts
This will start with a call and response, aiming to activate that full vocal cord connection. Then it will move into a descending arpeggio pattern with slides up and down. 5 - 3 - 1 - [slide] 5 - [slide] 1
Recommended vowels: Boh, Bah, Hey
That’s it!
